WineM: “
My favorite contribution to Search Patterns this week is WineM.

Here’s an excerpt from last year’s press release:
The smart wine rack uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to track individual bottles in the rack and identifies ones that fit the users’ wine selection criteria. Collectors and restaurants can use WineM racks to search collections, track specific bottles, update information about wine in real time, and manage inventory visually…the wine in a collection can now be dynamically reorganized by any combination of year, region, price, or any other information axis that interests the collector or sommelier.
A handheld device accepts queries, and full-color LED lights transform the elegant wine rack and the bottles themselves into a search results interface. The system even supports faceted navigation. Very cool!
I’m happy my disturbing hole has wormed its way into the minds of futurists.
If you’re coming to the IA Summit in Miami, please consider the IA Institute’s Leadership Seminar. An important topic and some great speakers!

1986 Seiko Speedmaster by Giorgetto Giugiaro: ”

If you’ve ever asked yourself, ‘What was that amazing watch Lieutenant Ripley wore in the 1986 movie ‘Aliens?” I have the answer for you. It was a Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed Seiko Speedmaster Chronograph. The vertical stopwatch pushers placed inside the asymmetrical case extension are what makes the watch entirely unique. Personally, I think he may have been influenced by the design of the 1973 LIP Mach 2000 that came out 12 years earlier. Many of Giugiaro’s other designs for Seiko between 1985-86 had asymmetric qualities as well, which you can see on Watchismo.

For those of you who don’t know, Giorgio Giugiaro was one of the most important car designers of the 20th century. Credited with the ‘folded paper’ car designs of the 1970s and ’80s, he was responsible for such classics as the Lotus Esprit, De Lorean DMC 12, Maserati Merak, Bora, Quattroporte, BMW M1, and most interesting to learn, my first car, the Volkswagen Scirocco.

Improvised bookmarks found in used books.: “

A website I just came across reminded me of an odd interaction I once had with a lady in the subway: I grabbed my book in my bag, opened it, and a $1 bill appeared which I used as a bookmark. I could sense how the lady did a double-take and looked and me saying: ‘You are not really using money as a bookmark, are you?’ ‘Uhm, yes I am…’. She was obviously appaled. Disovering this Improvised bookmarks found and used in books link over at designobserver let’s me sigh in relief. I am not that odd after all. People use MUCH stranger things than a $1 bill to mark a page. Paper Towel bookmarker anyone?

Protein’s [protein.co.uk] packaging for their Daft Punk’s debut film, Electroma [electroma.org] turns the DVD case into a hard bound picture book. No plastics involved, just a bit of glue.

This sounds exciting; Tommy Stockel has a new exhibition opening in Second Life of Land Art works that would be otherwise too difficult to recreate in real life. One of the defining characteristics of Land Art is that it is constrained by the physical characteristics of the geological materials from which it is made, and is vulnerable to change under the influence of natural weather and time, but free from these qualities in VR Stockel is able to output more imaginative sculptures in what is effectively the same medium; in this case Second Life’s free-found prims rather than rocks and dirt.

BMW tests IP networked iDrive car
BMW has started testing an IP solution for its cars that uses standard ethernet to connect car components to the central computer. The testbed could potentially lower costs: if not due to the physical component cost, then as a result of the IPv6 protocol’s future-proof design. BMW even feels satisfied that the IP network can cope with safety features, which may be undermined somewhat by the inevitable attempts at high-speed LAN parties in the back seat.
