R-Echos issue 3: live reblogging
On tuesday, I’ve been invited by Maki and Kajsa to introduce my work to their Art & Communication design students at Royal College of Art. The idea of this talk/presentation was to introduce them to as many as possible of the topics that are thrilling me at the moment; giving them an idea and some keys to understand and interact with the digital landscape that surrounds their practice as designers.
To do so, and preserve the coherence of the whole speech without getting to much into details, i decided to consider this talk as a live reblogging experimentation – and produced R-Echos issue 3: Live reblogging. I had a couple of bookmarks ready to be loaded in the browser, I also took with me a box with some nice things inside and a couple of books.

* please use the comments for details and further reference.

Megawords Storefront
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Megawords – the free Philadelphia-based magazine that collaborates with dozens of renowned and unknown artists and thinkers to cover the world through words and pictures, will leap off the page and into a month-long storefront exhibition during September 2008. The Megawords storefront project and exhibition will include a month-long period of intense activity including permanent and rotating installations, guest speakers, musical performances, workshops and film screenings.
“Frequently so-called ‘pop-up’ installations like this one take their inspiration from the world of advertising,” says Smyrski. “They put people in a fancy gallery space, overload the project with sponsors, and do everything possible to take artists out of their natural context. We believe people are most interesting exactly where they are, doing what they’re doing. With the storefront, we hope to spend time with people we respect, observe their creative process, and document the learning process. If we’re lucky, a community will emerge.”

Zineswap aims to be a resource through which people
can swap their zines with one-another.
It also aims to become a vast archive of contemporary zine publishing, existing as both an online catalogue
and an annual exhibition.
We are looking for contributions from people that self-publish their own zine or magazine. Content is not limited in anyway, your zine can be about anything.

There are a couple of Colophon-related events in Europe this week. First up, Andrew Losowsky – that’s him above next to a copy of IsNotMagazine – has curated an exhibition of magazines as objects in Milan. CR Blog has an in-depth report with details – it sounds great, lots of magazine-y-ness. Andrew’s comments here.
Meanwhile, Mike Koedinger has put together an exhibition of magazines as part of Vienna’s 8 Festival for Fashion and Photography, where this year’s theme is ‘Magazine Culture’ (nice title!). I’ll be joining Mike out there tomorrow to give the opening talk, and hope to post some pictures from the event later this week.

Breaking: Condé Nast/Wired Acquires Ars Technica
Condé Nast has acquired popular technology blog Ars Technica (ranked #5 all time on the BloggerBoard), we’ve confirmed. The site will become part of Wired Digital (which in turn is under CondéNet, run by Sarah Chubb). Wired Digital assets include Wired.com and Reddit (acquired in 2006). The acquisition price will not be disclosed, but our sources say it is in the $25 million range, which is what Condé Nast paid for Wired.com in 2006.
Effectively, Ars Technica is now part of Wired. Look for an official announcement next week.
This marks a new beginning for Ars Technica, which was originally founded in 1998 by Ken “Caesar” Fisher (based in Boston) and Jon “Hannibal” Stokes (based in Chicago). They, along with their 8 or so employees, will remain with the company as it is integrated into Wired Digital.
Comscore says Ars Technica has just 1.5 million monthly unique visitors and 4 million page views, but our understanding is that the actual number of unique visitors to the site is around 4.5 million. The audience demographic is very similar to Wired, although our sources say the overlap is relatively small.
This is also another lost customer for Federated Media Publishing, which sells advertising for Ars Technica (Digg left Federated Media last year to accept a very lucrative Microsoft deal that will pay out over $100 million over three years). CondéNet will now take over advertising sales.
