Hungry Man Killed Swan
A man who stabbed to death a swan because he was so hungry from fasting during Ramadan will be sentenced today.
Police investigating reports of a man seen with a knife in a park found ravenous Shamshu Miah with blood on his face and feathers in his beard.
The dead animal was in a plastic bag.
Magistrates in Llandudno heard how Miah, who is 52, told the police officers: “I was so hungry.”
The North Wales court room was told at an earlier hearing that the religious month of fasting, where Muslims consume no food or drink during daylight hours, had affected his mental health.
It ordered psychiatric reports, and that Miah should be remanded in custody until today.
He admitted charges of possessing a knife and of killing a wild bird.
At an earlier hearing prosecutor David Mainstone said police found the wild swan, “the property of the Queen”, in a carrier bag.
