Millennium Technology Prize To LED Inventor
Much of technology research and product design is a team effort; and, hence, seldom does an individual get sole credit and a large prize awarded for a world-transforming invention. But, that is exactly what has happened to Professor Shuji Nakamura, who has received the 1m Euro (£680,000) Millennium Technology Prize, at a ceremony in Helsinki, Finland. Per the BBC report : “The award recognized his inventions of blue, green and white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the blue laser diode”… “The Millennium Technology Prize is the world’s largest technology award, equivalent to the Nobel Prizes for science. It recognizes technological developments that have a positive impact on quality of life and sustainable development”. Formerly of Nichia Chemical Industries Ltd., Tokushima, Japan, Professor Nakamura is now with the University of California, at Santa Barbara.
