Jenny Holzer: Messages

Jenny Holzer uses billboards and LED text, as in this example displayed in London as part of her Messages series (1988-89), to comment on social issues. She says that she wants to ‘make the big ideas in culture intelligible as public art’. By using various information systems to put her ideas or ‘truisms’ across, she sends what she calls ‘alternative public service messages’ into the public sphere, where they challenge our preconceptions and question received social norms (courtesy Artangel)
