mythical northwest passage & terraforming

BBC NEWS | Americas | New Canadian PM rebuffs US envoy

The BBC’s Lee Carter in Toronto says Canada has only recently woken up to the fact that, with global warming being blamed for melting ice in the Arctic, the so-far-mythical northwest passage, which could link the Atlantic and the Pacific, may in fact become a reality.

The US and Canada, together with Denmark, Norway and Russia, have competing claims on parts of the Arctic and the economic bounty they may yield, including trade routes, fishing rights, and oil and gas.

it sounds like some are happy with climate changes… i wander how long it will last…

further reading about the mythical northwest passage becomig a reality (wikipedia) (did you notice how such an expression may become so violent?)
some others people perspective: climate change and inuit human rights

it reminds me a bit of all the scifi novels around terraforming (wikipedia)

what’s even more strange is that at the time i feel completely terrified by all these climate change story – and at the same time compleetly i can restrain the excitation about the not-anymore-scifi scenari about terraforming and spatial colonization (which are connected topics):

Space colonization, also called space settlement and space humanization, is the hypothetical permanent autonomous (self-sufficient) human habitation of locations outside Earth. It is a major theme in science fiction. While most people think of space colonies on the Moon or Mars, others argue that the first colonies will be in orbit. Several design groups at NASA and elsewhere have examined orbital colony feasibility. They have determined that there are ample quantities of all the necessary materials on the Moon and Near Earth Asteroids, that solar energy is readily available in very large quantities, and that no new scientific breakthroughs are necessary, although a great deal of engineering would be required.

Dystopie
